Shogi is Japanese chess, played on a 9×9 board. Some pieces have an equivalent in western chess, others do not have any western counterparts. All pieces contain Japanese kanji. By inserting the drop rule, the game is a lot more dynamic than most chess games: instead of moving or beating a piece, you can enter a previously beaten piece on an empty space. You can also get to know doubutsu shogi, a newer, simpler variant on a 3×4 board with figures instead of kanji.
